After a couple of hours searching for possible fixes, I ran into this link that solved my problem of not able to turn off the Password Protected Sharing option.
The key was to remove or reset the password for the Guest account. Who would have guessed? Good job Bill Gate. So, this is what I did: On the computer where the files I need to have access, launch "Run". In the "Open" field, enter "control userpasswords2" to get to the Guest account. From there, I reset the password of the Guest account. After that, I can turn off the Password Protected Sharing option and it stays off. Turn off anything related to sharing your information or logging into Wi-Fi networks automatically.
If you jumped over these options during install, you can turn off Wi-Fi Sense later. In Windows 10, click the Start button and choose Settings to go to the new Settings screen. Thanks for the links but i had already tried them before i posted on this site. I found my settings in the second part of the registry fix already matched, changing the first part and double checking the rest, rebooted with no success. Basically, you have to set the 'guest' account password to blank. Here are the instructions that I followed.
Try the following. Go to search and type control panel Then search in control panel for user accounts. If that does not work then right click your start button and select run. Type the following. Leave both fields blank. Reboot and try the connection again. In reply to DaveHanneson's post on June 11, Then you need to set a password for this account, restart PC reboot modem and restart all pc's then if you must use password protected sharing, enter user and password.
